Jewish Heritage On Bury New Road
In March 2023, the Bury New Road project held an open heritage morning at The Shrubberies synagogue on Bury New Road for people to tell their tales relating to the local Jewish community…

Here are six little films from that day…

Lionel Levy explains how his family arrived on Bury New Road from Gibraltar, and the anti-semitism he had to literally fight at school…

Rabbi Dovid Eisenberg discusses changes in the local Jewish community, how the shul has embraced technology to reach out…and there is a special Passover message about not letting social media enslave you…

Ian Creek, President of The Shrubberies, talks about his family on Bury New Road, how the shul plays its part and the challenges of the lockdown, which saw the synagogue shut for the first time in its history…

Jon Bleasdale, who writes the ace local heritage site www.prestwich.org.uk, explains how the Jewish community has moved about, plus a story of a rich Greek merchant handing out coins to urchins at Heathlands before it was a Jewish care home, and the three war memorial lights at The Shrubberies…

Louise Garman recalls an incident when she screamed The Shrubberies down during the holy day…

Steven Pearlman shows his collections of little prayer books handed out at ‘simchas’ – weddings and bar mitzvahs; his Sonny Warner Show signed Passover haggadah and his dad’s showbiz hat….

All these videos are also posted on the Mary Burns YouTube Channel – click here

Great to hear the various stories. They provide us with an insight into Jewish culture and heritage. Its great to reflect and remember stories from our youth. These stories are both funny and inspiring. Thank you.
