Salford City FC has announced that, next season, after consulting with fans, the club will be sporting the traditional orange/tangerine kit that was worn before the Class of ’92 takeover.
77.1% of fans voted for the change, which means that the whole stadium on Moor Lane will be converted to reflect the new strip, including seat and cladding colours.
“This landmark choice will evolve the Club into a bold, new era by combining our tangerine heritage with modern style to create a striking orange identity” a statement on the team’s website explains “From the terraces to the training ground, from the park pitches to the supermarket queue – when you see orange, you will know what it means. This is Salford. Proud. Unmistakable.”
The move to orange from the red shirts introduced by the Class of ’92 is a further step away from association with Manchester United; only David Beckham and Gary Neville are still financially involved with the club.
“Delighted that we’ve reverted back to orange, which over a 40-year period was the colour we were always associated with prior to the change to red” says long term fan, Richard Kedzior, who flew the original Salford City tangerine flag at all home games, even during the ‘red period’…
“It’s a welcome return to tradition” he adds “As well as giving us back our unique identity that will once again identify us all as proud supporters of Salford’s premier football club.”
The club had also hoped to re-introduce a new version of Salford’s original ‘Thriller dancing’ lion crest but now this is also the subject of a further consultation, with details to be announced…
