Salford City FC, based on Moor Lane just off Bury New Road, is currently consulting fans on almost reverting back to the kit that Gary Neville said he ‘didn’t like’ when the Class of ’92 took over the non-league club in 2014.
“Salford City has started a heritage consultation process with our fanbase as we explore reverting to orange as the Club’s primary colour, alongside updating the Club crest” a statement on the Ammies’ website explains.
“We’re uniting past and present by embracing our tangerine heritage and modern style to adopt a striking new colour: Orange” it adds “This isn’t just a colour. It’s our identity…when you see orange, you’ll know what it means: This Is Salford. Proud. Unmistakeable.”
The irony is screaming, as Gary Neville, in his first fan meeting introducing the new red shirts and emblem to hard core fans, told them ‘No team has ever won anything wearing orange’. Fans reminded him of the famous Netherlands teams and explained that Salford City actually wore tangerine shirts.
Most of the fans were unimpressed, as reported in the Salford Star that week (see here). A few years later, Gary Neville further explained the decision in the book Class of ’92 Out of Our League, which accompanied the tv series…
“When we came over we just felt there’s nothing about tangerine that represents Salford…And, to be honest with you, we didn’t like the colour…”
Meanwhile, the original ‘Thriller dancing lion’ crest that the Class of ’92 replaced with a ‘Lion King’ shirt image is also likely to re-appear. The Ammies’ website states that the new emblem will “bring together elements from every chapter of our history…while boldly stepping into the future…”
The only ‘element’ left of the Lion King image is just the initials ‘SCFC’. Meanwhile, if the change is approved, all the branding at the stadium will change, including the seat colours.
An initial consultation with fans at the Moor Lane stadium revealed that ninety per cent of those present were in favour of the new/old kit, while a wider feedback opportunity ends today 17th September (to make a comment find the feedback form link on this page)
A second in-person consultation will take place on Tuesday 23rd September to share and discuss the feedback with fans
“The proposed voting period for supporters to vote on the change will begin on Monday 6th October and will be open until Friday 10th October” the website states “A two thirds majority is required for change to happen, and the vote will be verified by an independent body. The vote is to change both the colour and the crest together.”
